The National Under-19 Cricket Team has started a retreat to prepare for the World Cup scheduled to be held in South Africa early next year on January 14-29, 2023.
The training to prepare for these games, which is being held in IPRC Kigali, started last weekend, where it is being done by the 15 players who were recently called up by the National Team Coach Leonard Nhamburo.
The coach of the Rwanda National Under-19 Cricket Team, Leonard Nhamburo, said that they are going to participate in this tournament wanting to perform well and get past the groups.
He said, “Our goal is to get through the groups and go to the next stage (Super six). I know if we play a good game we will do well and we can get more than our goal.
He went on to say that he did not want to change the team too much because he wanted to keep familiar players.
He said, “We have only changed one player from the team that gave us a ticket in September. We want to keep that winning spirit and continue where we left off when we got the ticket.”
Although Nhamburo says this, the chances are very low because Rwanda is in the second group which is considered strong; it shares with the UK, Pakistan and Zimbabwe.
In total, the World Cup will be attended by 16 teams divided into four groups. The top three teams in the group will continue to the next stage, where the first will meet the fourth while the second will face the third in the so-called ‘Super six’.
Those teams will also be drawn, will continue to play ½ and the final.
Rwanda and Indonesia are the teams of countries that will participate in these games for the first time.
