According to the Ministry of Health (MINISANTE), 12.6% and 13.7% of cervical cancer patients die compared to other types of cancer.
1,500,000 women need to be screened for cervical cancer nationwide. In Rwanda, cervical cancer accounts for 12.6% of all cancers, accounting for 13.7% of all deaths caused by various types of cancer.
According to the Second International Conference on Public Health in Africa, cervical cancer kills more than 300,000 people and infects more than 600,000 people every year.
The Secretary of State in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Yvan Butera, says that the government has done a lot to deal with this disease, including the extension of the service of diagnosis in health centers to the people.
The Director of Communicable Diseases at the National Health Center (RBC), Dr François Uwinkindi, told RBA thanks to this story, that now a program has started to examine elderly women who have not had the chance to be vaccinated against cervical cancer at the nearest health centers. those diagnosed with the disease are treated.
He said, “It is a program that we have been working on for about four years, in different clinics, and now I would say that we have reached about 30% of women between the ages of 30 and 49 that we should be examining and treating them. Now we are putting a lot of effort so that all the others who have not come to see us will be diagnosed early, if we find that they have a problem with cervical cancer, we can treat them.”
In Rwanda, 1,300,000 girls from the age of 12 have been fully vaccinated against cervical cancer.
