Psychologists say that extreme sadness is one of the main reasons that push people to commit suicide, so if it is not discussed in advance, it can lead to suicide.
In Rwanda, statistics show that males are more likely to commit suicide than females or females for various reasons.
The figures of the Police Department, RIB, show that there were 291 suicides in 2019/2020, and 285 in 2020/2021.
The total number of those killed in those years is 576, but 472 of them are men, and 104 are women.
This means that 82% of the suicides were men, and 18% were women.
Counselor in mental health and behavior, Nyandwi Daniel talking to IGIHE said that in the nature of men they refuse to talk about their problems so as not to appear weak, what makes them sad and not talk, which is one of the reasons for committing suicide in large numbers.
He said, “In the nature of men, they like to be independent and feel that there is no one else to rely on, and they feel that they have to make their decisions without consulting anyone.”
Nyandwi also says that this condition of men is what makes them when they get into problems that disturb them mentally, including family conflicts, loss of people who were important to them, loss of their property, chronic illness, etc., that there are those who choose not to talk about it and make a decision suicide
Another reason why men who are overcome with extreme grief do not show it is one of the misconceptions of Rwandan culture, where some people think that a man’s tears flow to his stomach, so that a man who shows his grief and cries is considered a coward.
Nyandwi advises everyone that when they are faced with a crisis that disturbs their mental health, they should go to psychological counselors to help them.
He said, “So the advice we give to all people in general is that when they encounter situations that we would call lucky or special situations that may have disturbed them mentally, in terms of daily life, we advise them that they should to psychiatrists to help them.”
The figures of the United Nations Health Organization, WHO, show that in the world, at least 800,000 people die by suicide every year and most of them are men.
